Proverbs 27:17 teaches that 'Iron sharpens iron, and one person sharpens another,' revealing our need for godly friendships that go beyond companionship to foster spiritual growth. True biblical friendship involves four key characteristics: sharpening one another through loving truth-telling, serving together intentionally within church community, stirring each other up toward love and good works, and sacrificing time and comfort for deeper relationships. Jesus exemplifies perfect friendship by emptying Himself and sacrificing everything for us, even calling us friends rather than servants. Developing these iron-sharpening-iron relationships requires initiative, vulnerability, and willingness to embrace the sometimes uncomfortable process of spiritual growth.
